SAO MAI GROUP: DEVELOPS $450 MILLION WIND POWER PROJECT IN LAOS

Thursday, 12/02/2026, 08:33 GMT+7

On February 11, 2026, in Vientiane Capital, Sao Mai Wind Power Joint Stock Company (Sao Mai Wind Power – a member of Sao Mai Group) officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Investment Promotion and Management Committee of the Lao PDR regarding the research and survey of a 300 MW wind power project in Nong Het District, Xieng Khouang Province (Northern Laos), aimed at exporting electricity to Vietnam.

This event marks a significant stride in Sao Mai Group's internationalization strategy within the renewable energy sector, simultaneously opening a new chapter in the journey of creating region-class “green energy”.

Strategic milestone in the journey of global expansion

The signing ceremony was solemnly held with the presence of high-ranking officials from the Lao Government and the Board of Directors of Sao Mai Group.

The project has an estimated total investment of approximately 450 million USD, implementing surveys over an area of nearly 18,000 hectares in the Nong Het plateau area – a location possessing ideal wind conditions and a favorable geographical position for infrastructure connection to transmit power to Vietnam.

This is not merely an energy project; it serves as an affirmation of Sao Mai Group's capability to participate in large-scale projects outside its territory, while also demonstrating the Lao Government's trust in the Group's reputation and experience in the field of renewable energy.

Contributing to ensuring energy security for Northern Vietnam

In the context of rapidly increasing electricity demand in Northern Vietnam, especially during peak seasons, the development of clean, stable, and sustainable power sources has become an urgent requirement.

Leveraging its location bordering Vietnam, the Sao Mai wind power project in Northern Laos is oriented to provide a large-scale power supply, contributing to supporting energy security and reducing the pressure of capacity shortages during the dry season.

Through the “Build – Own – Operate” (BOO) model, Sao Mai Wind Power is committed to applying advanced wind turbine technology, optimizing efficiency, and ensuring high technical standards to transform wind potential into clean electricity serving sustainable development.

This is not only an economic equation but also a practical contribution to the region's green energy transition strategy.

Distinctive Strategy: Clean Energy combined with High-tech Tourism

The strategic highlight of Sao Mai Group does not lie in building a conventional wind power plant. The Group continues to pursue a differentiated model that was successful at the 210 MWp Solar Power Plant in An Giang – a place that harmoniously combines clean energy and eco-tourism, creating a unique destination on the green tourism map.

In Northern Laos, that aspiration is elevated to a new height. The wind turbine fields are envisioned not only to produce electricity but also to be planned towards forming a “wind tourism ecosystem” – where modern technology blends with the majestic plateau landscape.

This strategy demonstrates Sao Mai's pioneering mindset:

- Not exploiting resources in the traditional way,

- Not stopping at mere production,

But creating multi-layered added value, both generating clean energy and opening up economic tourism potential for the locality.

That is how Sao Mai redefines the role of an energy investor in the green era.

Commitment to sustainable development and social responsibility

Alongside economic goals, the Nong Het wind power project is oriented to bring long-term benefits to the local community. According to the plan, the project will create jobs for the local workforce and technical experts, contributing positively to the socio-economic development goals of the region.

Right from the survey phase, Sao Mai Wind Power is committed to implementing strict standards regarding environmental protection, forest conservation, and preserving the traditional production land of the people. Simultaneously, the enterprise also plans to contribute to local social development and education funds.

The project, therefore, carries not only investment significance but is also a symbol of harmonious development cooperation between the enterprise and the community.

Strengthening Vietnam – Laos friendship in the green energy era

More than a 450 million USD energy project, Nong Het wind power is vivid proof of the increasingly deep and broad cooperation between Vietnam and Laos in the energy sector.

Sao Mai Group's pioneering exploration of the potential market in Northern Laos demonstrates the spirit of dedication, long-term vision, and aspiration to reach further of a leading multi-industry corporation in Vietnam.

From the foundation of capabilities affirmed domestically to cross-border strides, Sao Mai Group is gradually realizing its regional integration strategy, spreading “green energy” and creating sustainable values for the future.
