Harnessing clean energy (also known as renewable energy) from sources such as solar, wind, tidal, hydroelectric, and biomass to generate electricity is a global trend and a priority for the Vietnamese government. A significant turning point came in 2017 when the Prime Minister issued Decision No. 11 on the mechanism to encourage the development of solar power projects, ushering in a new era of clean energy in Vietnam. Seizing this opportunity, Sao Mai Group quickly joined the race and became a pioneer in this field. By the end of 2017, Sao Mai had put into operation a 1.07 MWp rooftop solar power plant, the largest in Vietnam at that time. Subsequently, in 2019 and 2020, Sao Mai commissioned solar power plants in Long An with a capacity of 50 MWp and in An Giang with a capacity of 210 MWp. With its long-term plan, Sao Mai will continue to invest in many other large-scale solar power projects.

As the world faces worsening climate change and Vietnam grapples with a shortage of electricity supply, Sao Mai's investment in solar power not only brings economic benefits to the company but also provides clean energy for the nation, contributing to environmental protection. Moreover, Sao Mai prioritizes implementing solar projects in less productive areas, which helps restructure production, creates job opportunities, ensures social welfare, and boosts local budgets.

In line with its strategy to develop clean energy, Sao Mai Group is expanding beyond ground-mounted solar plants to also include rooftop solar power installations on its business premises. Starting with an initial capacity of 1.07 MWp on the roof of one plant in the Sao Mai Industrial Complex, nearly all remaining plant roofs have now been covered with solar panels. Additionally, many other facilities of the Group have also been equipped with solar panels, bringing the total rooftop solar capacity of the Group to over 10 MWp. This has allowed the Group’s production facilities to be more self-reliant in their power supply and reduce electricity costs. To further professionalize the clean energy sector, the Group established Sao Mai Solar, a subsidiary responsible for overseeing this area. Sao Mai Solar not only manages and operates the Group’s solar plants but also provides solar panel installation services for external clients. By entrusting Sao Mai Solar with the implementation of numerous large-scale solar projects across various regions, totaling over 3 GWp, Sao Mai Group reaffirms its commitment to remaining one of the leading providers of clean energy in the country.
